Dear Parents,
Greetings from peaceful Park Lane Harbour! My wife and I both are starting our second year at BIPH. Jeni coordinates the English Language Learner program for the school, and I have joined the office of college admissions this year while continuing to teach one class of AP Psychology.
From Florida in the United States originally, we have lived abroad since 1998 as educators. Adding our careers together, we have more than sixty years of experience as teachers and leaders. I have been a teacher trainer, university lecturer, head of a business and social sciences school in a Malaysian/Australian university, and right before BIPH, an international high school teacher in Hanoi, Vietnam for five years. From there, I recommended many of my students for top colleges in the US and was glad to see them gain acceptance to places like Princeton, Duke (full academic scholarship), Brown, Stanford, USC, Davidson, and many others.
My wife and I have two adult daughters who attended the International School of Kuala Lumpur from Grades 2 and 4 until graduation. They both left our home in Malaysia to attend college in the US. The older earned a Master of Arts in Education from the University of Florida, and the younger earned a Ph.D. in History from Vanderbilt University.
My own educational journey includes an undergraduate degree in Business Management from the University of South Florida, then a Master’s degree and a Ph.D. in theology, philosophy, and ancient literature from Southwestern Seminary.
When I counsel students about their options for higher education, I encourage them to know themselves, to consider what makes for a satisfying and meaningful life, and to investigate what colleges have to offer. The goal should be a “best fit” university that will help them learn, explore, grow, discover, and connect with others along the way.
I quite enjoy working with young people, and I consider it a privilege to advise your children in this pivotal time in their lives. Feel free to reach out for a chat if you have questions.
May you have peace as a family in this potentially anxious time,
Dr. Todd Nelson
