What Students Say...

The Good

  • "Hopkins has been a place that has challenged me academically, and has allowed me to grow and invest myself in my own education in a way that I have never been able too. That being said, the social culture here is a bit juvenile. If you’re not looking to party at all, Hopkins is an idea place, but if you’re looking for a broad social scene, you will be relegated to Greek life parties. The clubs here are fairly active, and you can almost always find a place to participate in a common interest, or start your own club. My final words to prospective Hopkins students would be to expect to feel out of place here first semester, but have faith in yourself and your character that you’ll find people and communities here that are really genuine, caring, and supportive.”
  • “Johns Hopkins University is everything I imagined and more. I applied with the idea of being part of the best research university possible and that is exactly what I see on an everyday basis. Furthermore, the people you meet here are one of a kind and the multiple opportunities present to allow you to form lifelong memories with friends you will cherish forever. I believe that a misconception many have about Hopkins is that it is full of "nerds" but that is not the case. Everyone has their own personality, and background and has amazing things to share. I believe the University allows for a balanced life between academic, social, and wellness realms. People try to work out 4+ times a week and attempt to go out once a week. The only thing I would complain about is Baltimore as a city.”

The Not-So-Good

  • "Do not go here if you value in-person classes! My daughter is second semester of sophomore year and only has one in-person class out of five this semester and sadly, this is her first fully in-person class during her 2 years at Hopkins. Moreover, for hybrid classes, the in-person part is often handled by a TA not a professor. The university seems to value professor convenience over what is in the best interest of the students. Mind you, the requirement to attend in-person classes at Hopkins is fully-vaxed with booster, testing 3x a week and all students must wear N95 masks. It is one of the safest teaching environments out there!”
  • “I went in really excited about college but found myself surrounded by a bunch of students who were driven by anxiety and stress more than their passion for learning. Hopkins is full of kids who refuse to ask why they're doing the things they are and refuse to look inwards for validation; these students will rely on other people telling them what they're supposed to do for their entire lives. However, the classes are undeniably fascinating and the professors are exceptional. It's the other students that make Hopkins unpleasant.”
