Overview

Emory University is a private institution that was founded in 1836. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 7,010 (fall 2020), its setting is city, and the campus size is 631 acres. It utilizes a semester-based academic calendar.

Located near downtown Atlanta, it is divided into nine schools and colleges, four of which serve undergraduate and graduate students. First- and second-year students are required to live on campus, but a majority of students remain on campus all four years. The Student Programming Council organizes events and performances throughout the year, including from well-known entertainers and musicians. A popular student organization is Volunteer Emory, which oversees community service activities. Regardless of whether they participate in varsity athletics, all students are required to take two courses in physical education. Emory also has a thriving Greek community.

What Students Say...

The Good

  • "I'm finishing up my first year at Oxford College of Emory University, and I've loved it! There's a strong sense of community that I've never felt anywhere else, and all the people are really nice. The student body is incredibly smart, while also being down-to-earth, laidback, and cooperative rather than competitive. The education I receive is second to none, and my professors have been extremely insightful, personable, and accommodating. The campus itself is beautiful, with the tree-filled quad. The main drawback is the food, as, even though the quality is great, there are only really 2 food options on campus and they get repetitive fast. UberEats and DoorDash are lifesavers. Oxford College of Emory University has become my new home, and I can't wait to go back next year."
  • "Beautiful campus in the heart of Atlanta. Ample opportunities for student leadership, outdoor activities, etc. There is a farmers' market on campus a few times a week. Lots of places to sit outside for picnics, study groups, etc. The university has its own park!”
  • β€œI love the student culture and engagement at Emory University. Everyone is super excited about learning and involved inside and outside of the classroom. The teachers are super passionate about their class topics and are always willing to offer extra help and guidance.”

The Not-So-Good

  • "Professors do try their best to help the students out, are pretty flexible. Obviously lots of cheating by the Emory students, but that's to be expected from a school like Emory.”
  • "I am transferring from Emory University. The great parts about the school are that it has a lot of diversity which creates an awesome learning environment, and Atlanta is a cool city to live in. However, Emory is not actually in Atlanta proper which is a huge let down because you have to take a ~20 minute uber to get anywhere cool. The campus is beautiful except that for all of my freshman year it was under construction. The academics are heavily centered around pre-professionalism so if you want to do anything other than that prepare to feel vaguely marginalized.”
  • β€œDo not go to Oxford first, itβ€˜s basically not a part of Emory. For the most part the teachers are not as thorough in teaching material as on main campus, there is zero social life, and teachers assign absurd amounts of busy work. In addition, the classes are significantly harder for no reason. I signed up for calc 1 at oxford and had to drop it, luckily still during add/drop period. When I proceeded to the main campus I signed up for cal 1 again and received an A in the course. I then took calc 2 the following semester and received an A. Oxford is significantly harder and your GPA will be lower than the main campus students, which can hurt after college job options.”
